Cleaning old tiles

I have Victorian tiles in my hallway that are very dull with dirt but normal scrubbing isn't doing much to them. Anyone have any tips about how I can brighten them up?

I've got a metal toaster and got a few years worth of greasy marks off it the other day using a bicarb of soda/wine vinegar combo - it fizzes a bit but is nicely abrasive and non toxic. Might make your hall smell like a chip shop for a while tho :)
