do you ventilate it well? have windows open etc?
wash bedding regularly? have you had the carpets washed?

oreocrumbs · 04/07/2012 21:33

Get rid of the air freshners. Stinky horrible poison!

If you are on top of the cleaning, I think its probably an airing out issue. Do you have the windows open at every oppourtunithy?

What does it smell of? If its dog, have you cleaned the sofs and carpets? You can sprinkle bicarbonate soda on then rub in, leave for a while and hoover off. That is an excellend deodoriser.

With my dog beds, I wash the bed pads once a week, but put a bath towel (not one I use) on it and change that every day.

Define 'stinks'.

Cooking smells?

Stale air due to lack of ventilation?

Pets?

Bad drains/dirty loos/minor plumbing leaks?

Damp/mildew?

Dirty clothes and stale smelling uphostery?

Sweaty feet and BO?

We need more info.

oreocrumbs · 04/07/2012 21:34

Ahem, I can spell opportunity really Blush

HerMajestyQueenHillyzabethII · 05/07/2012 18:06

What happened to the OP? Has she passed out from the noxious fumes? Confused

WantAnOrange · 05/07/2012 18:37

DS (6) caught me laughing at your post HerMajesty and didn't get the joke, now he's worried that the OP is actually dead! Grin He says "what happens if we read about her in the newspaper tomorrow, dead from a stinky house?"

MySonIsMyWorld · 05/07/2012 22:46

HAHAHA Laughing so much!
My house smells funny, carnt describe dog a little, mildy and strange
I open the windows as much as i can but the yard is shared and the neighbours smokes and i dont want it coming in the house. I bath the dog regulary and he even has doggie deo! His bed gets washed every about 4 days? I hoover with smelly stuff on the carpets first (dont know what its called) it still smells yuk

hmm

are you SURE it smells and it isn't just your mind playing tricks on you?

do you have some very honest friends who can tell you what they think?

HerMajestyQueenHillyzabethII · 06/07/2012 06:37

I'm starting to think you might be imagining it too! Using dog deodorant and washing curtains every two weeks is not normal thorough to say the least so I think perhaps you have an extremely keen sense of smell (are you PG?) and you are being a bit paranoid.

WantAnOrange · 06/07/2012 07:43

Or, if it really does smell, could it be something more obscure? We had a damp smell for a couple of weeks that I just couldn't shift. Turned out the washing machine door was leaking a little so the carpet underneath was getting wet, then drying, causing it to smell bad. Is there a spot in the house that it is worse?

ThisTimeNextYearRodney · 06/07/2012 08:06

There was a really good thread on this a while ago, loads of brilliant tips, will se if i can find it

ClaudiaSchiffer · 06/07/2012 08:10

Have you madly pissed someone off recently and they've sewn prawns into your cushions?

Acumenoop · 06/07/2012 08:11

Open the windows every day, front and back to get cross venting. Throw the air fresheners away.

Put used dryer sheets in the bottom of your bin. Throw a cup of cat litter or dry used coffee grounds (you can get bags of this from Starbucks for free) in the liner to soak up bin juice.

Wash your bedding with white vinegar etc. Highly perfumed stuff can make it all worse. You want to get to NO smell, initially at least.

And finally, get a second opinion. Once I had an abscess in my jaw and I thought everything smelled bad, but the smell was in my nose. Yuck. (TMI sorry)

Llareggub · 06/07/2012 08:13

I had a terrible stink lately. It turned out to be the Brie I'd bought.

Not quite the same situation, but loads of useful tips for getting your house smelling nice

Hepsibaaah · 06/07/2012 21:20

My DS has returned home from uni, and I have to say his things reek - think moldy testosterone riddled trainers - deeply unpleasant. I use a lot of tips from Here, plus v hot wash with soda crystals on anything that i could. Not sure which smells worse - DS or our (lovely) elderly stinky terrier!!

MySonIsMyWorld · 06/07/2012 21:24

Im going to try some of the natural things now soda crystals etc etc....less air freshners!
My house does smell sometimes, my dp makes our bedroom STINK! I carnt even work out the smell - oh god im going mad x

Marking my place.

If our house is shut up for awhile (when we are away) it definitely has a weird smell.
