Mine is getting ready to go to vacuum cleaner heaven. We don't have any pets and mostly carpeted floors. Any suggestions?

I have the miele cat and dog and it's fantastic. Bought upon the basis of many recommendations on this site, John Lewis and amazon.

Miele fills the top of the Best Buys in Which, though Bosch are in there too.

As you have mostly carpets, you might consider an upright. You can get beats+sweeps+cleans motorised heads to go on a cylinder vac, but they are very expensive and fairly heavy. A first-class upright is generally more expenive than a first-class cylinder, and has more working parts.

The top few Which Best Buys were all cylinder:
(best first)

Bosch
BSG8PRO1GB Home Professional 82% £264.95

Miele
S6290 Silence 80% £203

Miele
Cat & Dog TT 5000 (S5261) 80% £200

Bosch
BSGL5126GB 79% £145

Miele
S 4782 Remote Control HEPA 70% £245

Miele
S5281 79% £200

and best uprights:

Miele
S 7210 76% £230

Miele
Allervac (Power Plus) S7280 76% £257

Miele
S 7510 AutoCare 74% £298

Miele
S 7260 Cat & Dog 74% £260

can you see a pattern here?

I've got a Vax Power 6 and its great. I love mine and have regularly found my self getting really carried away and hoovering the beds and the buggy (and I hate housework). Its light, its easy to empty and it sucks up everything. The Accessories are a wee bit rickety but not really too bad when compared to any other hoover I've had.
I also read a review which said that frail people shouldn't buy it as the suction is so mighty they might stick to the floor and not be able to do any hoovering :)

Righteousdude · 18/06/2012 20:38

I've just bought a roomba and shall never Hoover again apart from the stairs and cracks
