30 days in June, 30 things from each room

Inspired by Trinity's post (which I now can't find, I have decided that it is time to DECLUTTER.

This month I intend to get rid of 30 things from each room. It won't take me to minimalism but it will start to help.

I probably should have started on the first but I didn't. I'm starting today because the 1st July means another 3 weeks of procrastination.

Anybody want to join me?

yes please :)
Is it one thing every day? Surely noone has thirty rooms to do for the month?

Jinsei · 06/06/2012 13:22

Ooh, I'll join in! I could easily part with 30 things from each room!

golemmings · 06/06/2012 14:39

I pity anyone with 30 rooms... It means you don't have to do a room a day but for most people probably a couple of rooms a week.

I've just been through the bathroom chest and found the first 'perfume' I was bought by father Christmas, some henna for hand painting (god knows what posessed me, I can't draw for toffee!) And purple hair spray. Still 2 carrier bags of rubbish are on their way to the bin and most of the stuff that could cause damage/annoyance in the hands of small children (nail varnish, e45 cream, scissors etc) have been removed.

And all the bath toys are now in a bucket of Milton. Result.

Ah OK maybe not 30 things from each room, but certainly 30 things from my flat ( other than normal rubbish I would throw out anyway). Do we have to subtract the number of new things we bring in from the total?

golemmings · 06/06/2012 17:59

I think subtracting new things is probably the way to go. I have added 4 months of contact lenses to the things in the bathroom but I can't see I'll add much else. nappies and bog roll tend to be 1 in 1 out but I hoard contact lenses because I just don't wear them enough.

I'm in. Think I will start with the bathroom as there are 30 pieces easily.

Bedroom will probably be all clothes --- I have a lot.

Child's room will be toys & clothes.

Kitchen will using up excess work as not much to throw away there. I'm thinking of stretching out my grocery deliveries so I actually eat the food I have rather than freezing it and buying more.

Prom Queen

Could you convince your dcs that it is a challenge and do a bar chart with a column for each room/person and they get to colour in another square as they get rid of each item. You could have a rule that each "get rid" item has to be vetted by you so they don't ditch anything they shouldn't. You could even agree that first person to 30 gets a (non-cluttery) prize.

It might not work on your DH though he might possibly be embarrassed when dcs are making a joke of how far behind he is suddenly feel like joining in the fun.

I can't do 30 items a room but i will loose 30 from the house. ( it creeps in!!)

Bin bag out...

educatingarti · 07/06/2012 10:25

OK, so...

9 items taken to charity shop, 1 item binned and all the rubbish cleared from car ( It has been there months so I reckon it counts!)

But... 5 new items of clothing brought in!

So a total of +6 out so far.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 07/06/2012 12:35

Ok so cleared out the two loads of paper that have been sitting in the kitchen and sitting room for months and months....I'd say it's way more than 30 things! I also did loads of tiding and organising so I can see what I have much easier and hopefully use what's there before I buy more.
I can't get into the bedroom as dp is on nights so still in bed, but already have 2 handbags for the charity shop.
Will also be clearing out the car today as it's being left in to garage tomorrow so will probably be at 1000 things by then!

MushroomSoup · 07/06/2012 18:00

Try scooping up all of the DCs'/DH's sentimental tat treasures and put them in a binbag. Put the binbag out of sight. Chances are they will not ask for any of their crap prized possessions within a month. So then you bin it! If one of them asks "have you seen my...?" you say "hmmm I think so" and retrieve it in secret. If the binbag has already gone you say "if only you were tidier you'd know where it was."

Curlyfrizzball · 07/06/2012 18:36

I'm up for doing this. Really need to de-clutter. Have actually got rid of some stuff today, but I'm not going to count that - 30 things per room will be a drop in the ocean around here, but it'll be a good start!

Rainydayagain · 07/06/2012 19:34

Oh my god mushroom, i do that!!!

We are still looking for two items that i threw out ;-) out of hundreds i might add.

MushroomSoup · 07/06/2012 22:54

Lol @ Rainyday
Hidden binbags ROCK!

mirpuppet · 07/06/2012 23:44

Started with bathroom -- 2 bath toys thrown out (with permission) and some never used antacid medicine.

More to come,

golemmings · 08/06/2012 23:30

Just listed 4 bundles of baby/maternity clothes, baby waterproofs, baby gym, crib and nappies on netmums the biggest local sales board as well as 2 local fb groups. Hopefully it will all go.

To offset it all I've just bought 2 new running tops from wiggle and I'm waiting for a camelbak to arrive. Still its 2 things in to my room, one in to the hall and hopefully about 70 things out of the spare room!

OP posts:
golemmings · 11/06/2012 22:25

13 items of maternity clothing rehomed from the spare room tonight; baby gym goes tomorrow and cot top changer on wednesday.

Sack of stuff - including a suit, half a dozen t-shirts, a couple of skirts, some books etc all bagged for shelter collection tomorrow.

Mum2Fergus · 11/06/2012 22:35

Can I join please?! Feeling very smug for having a clear out of my clothes today! 1 bag of rubbish and 3 good size carrier bags to the charity shop. Also DS toddler bed bedding shipped to SIL!

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 11/06/2012 22:37

Ten things gone from my make up bag tonight :)
I might have bought a dress for myself and three for dd2, but we need them Blush

educatingarti · 13/06/2012 13:42

I've just put 19 old magazines and catalogues in the recycling. It would have been 20 but I decided that I wanted to re-read one of them Blush

Into home - a new blusher

So running total so far is 6 + 18 = 24
