Ours goes green with algae really quickly it seems which defeats the whole point! Is it a daily or weekly wash thing?

DH does ours once a week, more in the summer when it can get mouldy quickly...

MousyMouse · 05/06/2012 09:10

I clean ours and change the filter every three weeks.
the trick is not to have it anywhere near the window, which is too light and encourages the algae to grow and to only fill up with the water you really use. water (unless treated with uv light or chemicals) goes off quite quickly if it is standing.

Er, stick in the dishwasher when the filter gets changed every four weeks.... slattern Though, I've never seen green on it.

PigletJohn · 05/06/2012 09:26

do you keep it in the fridge, granny?

soandsosmum · 05/06/2012 12:43

Hmm... need to find a dark location for it then. We use about 3 jug fulls a day, so always pretty fresh water in it.

fridge is dark as well as cold. Both will deter widlife.

MsWeatherwax · 06/06/2012 06:38

Ours is on the windowsill, but I might move it. Sometimes it migrates to under the cupboard, it's wayward. Kitchen is usually fairly cold anyway.

Confused but if there was something else you were going to eat or drink, for example a cheese sandwich or a carton of juice, and you left it on the worktop day after day, you wouldn't be surprised to see it growing green or black stuff. You'd put it in the fridge, surely?

soandsosmum · 06/06/2012 21:48

Not enough room in our fridge, sadly

You mean like a brita filter jug?
I clean outs every 4 weeks only... Blush never ever turned green and it never goes to the fridge. It is not far from the lichen window either.
I guess if yours is mouldy you should just get a new one!

PigletJohn · 07/06/2012 09:55

I've got a narrow-shaped one that will fit in the fridge door.
