how to clean a carpet..??

I have a bit of an issue here, thanks to my dogs and kids etc my carpets are now filthy and I have tried getting a carpet cleaner, however, it seems destined to go unclean as hiring one is out of the question (I've looked into it and the cheapest one I can get is going to cost 70quid for 1 day hire and I just can't afford that kind of outlay. For just one day!)

As I am PG I can't get down on my hands and knees and clean it this way as I would quite possibly end up laid up for a few days!! Even doing small things like the washing up is taking 3 attempts at the moment as I've pulled some muscles in my back!

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas about any sprays or the like that I can use to get the carpet looking like a carpet and not just a mud pile in my living room??

TIA!

I got a rug doctor for about £30 for 1 day's hire. Can you shop around?

I've not been able to get one of those, I've shopped around for a few days now to try and find the cheapest deal but the town I live in don't seem to be doing well with DIY shops etc!!

Oh dear! Store locator is here: www.rugdoctor.co.uk/store-locator - there may be one somewhere you hadn't thought of. There are 10 within 10 miles of here but only 3 are DIY shops. Most of the rest are dry cleaners.

I have tried Vanish spray and a strong stain-removing spray. Both are averagely effective on stains (they don't get everything out but do reduce them) but to do the whole carpet would be very tedious and bad for your back.

I have a Bissel Steamvac.

It doesn't use steam but can heat water, which it mixes with the detergent.

It looks like a big Hoover and is very easy to use, therefore it gets used.
