How wet do steam cleaners get your carpet?

Just that really.

We have mostly wool carpets, but they're about 6 years old and they are (thanks to DS) now looking a bit murky in places.

I'd like to steam the main "walkways" in the house and the living room, but am wary about it with DS being 20mo

So how wet, and how long to dry?

Quite wet and at least overnight to dry with the one we use.
