Musty smelling top

I have a top that keeps coming out of the wash smelling musty and damp even once it's dried. I've given the machine a good hot wash when empty and everything else I wash is fine even other items in the same wash.
Any ideas?

how do you dry it? Line, tumbler, or draped inside the house?

Is it quite old? Some fabrics start to keep smells even after a good wash once they're old.

Is it drying fast enough sometimes things smell odd if they dry too slowly.

Dry on a rack indoors. It is a few years old and is a favourite so has been washed and worn a lot.

i once had the same problem... leave the garment soaking for 2-3hrs in water with a good helping of wine vinegar and then wash as usual... that gets rid of any smell :)

I'll give it a go. It can hardly make it smell worse at least!

I think drying it indoors will be the problem. It means it is hanging around long enough for the bacteria and moulds to start growing again. Unless you use a pretty hot wash, they will not all be killed in the washer.

Eugh!

Oooooh, let us know how you get on!

do you use fabric softener?
I find that if I use f/s on dh smelly shirts, they smell worse.
what I do to get rid of the smell:

  • use less powder, about a third of the recommended dose
  • use half a scoop of soda crystals
  • extra spin so the clothes come out of the mashine that extra bit dryer
  • if the smell doesn't go away even then try dettol liquid disinfectant (instructions for laundry on bottle), works well on very very smelly sport clothes.
