is it bicarb to get smells out of carpets?

Just bought a new house, and while ideally we would love to rip out all the old, smelly (dogs and smoke) carpets, the budget will not stretch to it sadly.

So, am I right in thinking that liberally scattering bicarb, leaving for a couple of days and then hovering lots will help? And then repeat a few times until acceptable...

If not, what is it I can use (easy methods preferred as am almost 7 months pregnant)

Bicarb does help :) Could you hire or borrow a carpet cleaner if the doggy odour is still there. I have Kirby hoover that also shampoos it cleans carpets brillaintly and they dry off quickly too. I have amtico flooring downstairs now but the kirby was great after looking after my sisters dogs.
