which robot vacuum cleaner thingy?

I can't tell the difference between all the different roombas. Is it just a case of picking a price you're comfortable with paying?

and are there any other, better models I should consider?

I saw a recommendation on another thread saying it was their best ever baby buy and at 32 weeks pg, this is VERY attractive to me!

I want to buy one but not till we move. I'll be looking for one that docks automatically to recharge, schedules itself, and I can set an infra-red barrier on for steps. I was looking at this one, which seems a much cheaper one than the Roomba, but might not be as good!

Other ones come up on Groupon a lot if you subscribe.
