Stubborn carpet stains

Has anyone got any good tips for shifting really stubborn carpet stains? MIL suggested a weak solution of bleach but I'm a little reluctant! Many thanks

have you got a steam cleaner...i find steaming the stain then rubbing vigourously can take it away...
