Can you hire big paper shredders?

I want to do a big clear out. I have thousands of photographs, old documents, paperwork etc. I fancy just dumping everything in the garage and going through it all and shredding it. My friend gave me her old shredder but it was pathetic and seized up after a few pages of A4. It filled up so quickly too. I thought if I just hired a decent one I could spend a day or two shredding merrily away.

I've been online and seen lots of companies who do it for offices but they turn up in a van with the machine on the back. I have no need for anything so large-scale and I want to do it myself - I certainly don't just want to bag stuff up and give it to someone else to do.

I'm in Glasgow.

Just did a google search on this very question and found this post of mine from 6 years ago! So, exact same question and hope I get some replies this time 😄

Have you been sitting on your boxes and boxes of paper all this time?

starfishmummy · 16/09/2018 01:38

I don't know about hiring shredders but there are companies who will shred for you - you buy a bag, fill it and take it to them for shredding. Google "shredding services"

Eek. I replied to a zombie thread

TheClitterati · 16/09/2018 01:45

Use the mobile shredders. They come with a truck and charge per sack of shredding. Over in minutes.

NoSquirrels · 16/09/2018 08:45

I don’t think you can hire an industrial shredder to do it yourself so the mobile shredding places would be best. Why do you want to shred it yourself? What’s the issue with the mobile vans?

cartblanche · 17/09/2018 23:44

BlackforestCake yes, I have been waiting six whole years for an answer Grin

I actually just ignored the issue and have been shoving stuff up in the loft for the intervening years - out of sight out of mind. Unfortunately I am now moving out of this rented house after 9 years (Extended 3-bed semi-detached house with a huge loft and garage space) into a 3-bed terrace with no loft or garage and need to drastically reduce and downsize. It's quite overwhelming.

My resistance to the big truck turning up is that it might sitll be overkill. I guess I just want a decent shredder that doesn't jam and I quite enjoy the process of doing it myself.

Don't worry starfishmummy it's not a zombie thread when it has been resurrected by the original OP surely?!!

I guess I need to hang around on the housekeeping board to get tips about decluttering...

They all jam... Grin

There are 100's on Amazon. Get a mid sized one. Read the many many reviews to help you choose.

…just doing my 6-yearly check-in - have domestic shredders improved in the intervening years at all? I’ve still got a load of photos and paperwork under my bed 😂

We just set fire to a whole load of paperwork in our firepit as had so much clearing out my late Aunt’s house. Saved so much time, our shredder can only cope with a few pages at a time. We would have had the fire anyway just changing the fuel.

DH did say we probably looked quite dodgy piling papers into the fire rather than wood though!

TheClitterati · 29/09/2024 04:50

I have a bag of shredding in the corner of my home office that has been there for years.

Yes you have waited long enough for technology to get better.😂

If you're a legendary six figure salary MNetter who can afford £130 ish: Rexel optimum auto feed 45 sheet shredder, every paper hoarders dream because you put a stack on it and off it goes, and munches through it all while you get on with sorting out more for it, or something more interesting.

If you have a more normal budget or enjoy shredding as a passtime: £40 ish gets you a Fellowes powershred LX25 shredder, does six sheets at a time, copes with old credit cards and staples, but you have to feed it as per standard shredder.

Tons of them to choose from nowadays. These two both cross cut to sensible sizes security wise, and known to be tough available from Curry's and Argos. Hope to see you in 2030 with a long levity report on whatever you eventually choose.😀

Do you have a Library of Things in your area? This is the kind of thing they would have

Onlyplans · 02/10/2024 20:19

You can pay someone to do it for you by the sack
