cleaning a slate hearth

We had a log burner fitten last Aug. Best thing we've ever done for fast cheapish cosy evenings. Until now, the hearth has looked ok with a quick dust pan and brush job to sweep up all the bits.
Lately though its started to show quite a few marks- sort of pale coloured like water mark type blobs...Although I am not some house proud fussy person I would like to be able to clean it properly (when I can be bothered!!) I scrubbed it with a drop of fairy liquid in warm water the other day and whilst wet looked stunning but once dry (if anything) it looks worse.
Any tips...?

We have a black slate hearth and to keep it clean, I give it a quick wipe with a damp cloth, then buff with a few drops of olive oil on a soft cloth. The oil really makes a difference!

Mine keeps good with just a wipe from a wet cloth, but that oil tip sounds good.

I wonder if maybe you've had some sap oozing on the hearth or something?
