you could get a label-making machine. Uses glossy white tape and prints in black. I got an Epson but Dymo also make them. The tape has a sticky back. Seems to be waterproof and hard wearing. Not at all expensive.

There are hand-held ones, and ones that connect as a computer printer.

OOo sounds tempting, I just bought a laminator - could get carried away here. what have you labelled?
-are the labels more attractive thanthe usual ones you can make and print via word?

not more attractive, just neat and hard-wearing on the glossy tape. My machine would fit in a (large) pocket or toolbox.

People use them for shelf-edge labels, switches and circuit breakers.
