How to keep carpets clean?

Disclaimer: I'm a terrible housewife.

In our old house our carpets always seemed to have marks and stains and bits on, even after a Hoover. I put this down to not hoovering often enough, plus wear and tear of living there for 6yrs.

However, we moved into our new house 2mo ago and already the lovely living room carpet looks awful. I Hoover every couple of days (I'm 37 weeks pregnant so that's all I can muster) but it feels as if as soon as I sit down it's dirty again. It's a cream carpet so everything shows up, but I think I must be doing something wrong!! I never notice friends carpets looking anything but totally immaculate.

It's a new Hoover, bought when we moved in.

Am I missing something?!

Dont let anyone eat or wear shoes in there

Put a rug down

Yy to hoovering alot and getting rid of any wet bits or stain straight away

My inlaws (pale green immaculate carpet) have got a Dyson and swear by it

You need to stop everyone wearing shoes in the house. No shoes allowed past the hallway. Be rigorous about it. Shoes carry dirt. Then stop children taking food or (anything else that may be sticky or mark) into rooms with carpets.

This is what we do and it keeps carpets very clean. Then get someone in to do a proper water based clean of the carpets once a year with a van mounted cleaner that sucks the water out of the carpets once they have been cleaned so they are virtually dry.

Those turtle mats are great for by the front/back door as they really do take all the crapola off people's shoes if they do venture in

I share your pain. We moved into our current house less than two years ago and the carpets are filthy compared to how they looked when we moved in. I have just bought a vax upright carpet cleaner as they were reviewed by Which magazine last month (I think). The one we have bought is the second from the best, and I am hoping that it will help. I think it was £175.
