Ironing a white sheet and the iron spewed out brown stuff. What can i do to prevent it? It was a Philips steam generator iron. Any ideas please?

Run the self clean option - it sounds like its got a build up of lime scale or whatever inside its tank.

Yes, try descaling it but, brown? Could it be rust ?

OhChristHasRisenFENTON · 06/04/2012 17:33

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting it's gone rusty through lack of use like mine or anything [bugrin]

FayKnights · 06/04/2012 17:37

Needs a descale, are you in a hard water area? Try THIS
my iron is supposed to self clean, but clearly it didn't get the memo!

On a separate note, Fenton your name makes me [bugrin] every time I see it! Sorry for hijack.

orangeflutie · 07/04/2012 13:50

I used to get this after a while with previous irons. You could try descaling but it might only clear it for a little while.

I've learnt now, I now only use de-ionised water to fill up with. I live in a hard water area and tap water just ruins irons!

Buy a new one. they never clean out properly ime.

BonfireOfKleenex · 08/04/2012 19:37

You haven't been using malt vinegar to descale it have you?

Probably not, I am almost certainly the only person on the planet stoopid enough to have tried that one...

PigletJohn · 08/04/2012 19:48

I'd go for a descale and deionised water, if I didn't already have a water softener.

I imagine a steam generator must use quite a lot of water. In this chalky area a lot of people use Water Filter jugs which absorb the hardness and other impurities.

bruffin · 08/04/2012 19:54

I have a PHILIPS steam generator and you need to self clean regularly, but it does the job.
You need to wait 10 hours from the last time you used it.
Unscrew the knob on the side of the base. Fill it up with water and swish it around, then empty at least 3 times.

Don't think it's hard water.live in ireland -thought we had soft water here. Definitely not malt vinegar usedGrin
