Carpet cleaning...what do you do?

None of them are dreadful, but I've lived here 2 years and inherited them all. I keep seeing VAX tv ads but I'd rather not spend a fortune on a lightly-used gadget. It's a very small house so I don't want someone charging me the earth to clean the few carpets I do have. Suggestions welcome!

We've hired a rug doctor before, it's about £40 and will clean all the carpets and the sofas (if you don't have washable ones!)

Having someone in is actually quite cheap, ring round for some quotes.

Plus they do all the furniture moving for you too, the cleaners they have are way more powerful than the ones you can hire.

I've had people do it for me, love it, so quick and so clean (ours were awful, vomitous child and potty training for some time, not to mention the room we wheeled the buggy in and out of). I have them do the trafficways i.e. they don't move the furniture, is about £30 a room, more/less depending on size of room.
