Another smoke smell question - from a wool blanket?

I bought a beautiful knitted blanket from a car boot sale today, but when I got home I realised it stinks of cigarette smoke. How can I get the smell out, assuming I can't wash it (will it shrink?) ?

I left it hanging outside all afternoon but it still reeks...

You can wash wool, it just needs to be done by hand or in machine on hand wash cycle with non-bio detergent. A couple of washes and a good blow on the line and it should be fine.

Are you sure it's wool though, and not acrylic - wool is really expensive so lots of knitters use acrylic or similar.

Hmm, am guessing acrylic then as she only charged me £6 Grin
Can I wash acrylic?

I mean, can I wash acrylic in the machine? It's fairly big too, so would a machine-wash stretch it out of shape?

It shouldn't do, but if you're worried then hand-wash it.
