So I'm finally at end of BT broadband/home phone contract

Can anyone recommend a reliable, good value home broadband/landline/phone package? BT was soooooooooo expensive and I was never able to watch iplayer without being disconnected. I just use the net for email/surfing and watching catch up TV and I need a landline phone package with free evening and weekend calls. I've read so many reviews but can't seem to find anything that many people seem happy with. Anyone on plusnet and if so how do you find it?

We have been with Virgin for broadband, landline and tv for about 2.5 years. Have been very happy. Costs about £50 per month.

AgnesCampbellMacPhail · 24/03/2012 20:27

We just switched back to Virgin after signing up for a Sky deal last year. Sky was awful. Our broadband rarely worked and never at the advertised speeds. They screwed up the instsllation, the billing and customer service was a joke. I'm still cross with DH for switching just so we could get Sky Atlantic.

spammertime · 24/03/2012 21:21

Just don't go with talk talk. We changed to them, and I was literally counting down the days until we could go back to Bt!

Dolcegusto · 24/03/2012 21:23

We're with sky and never had any problems. We pay £20 a month for tv, broadband and phone calls, plus line rental to bt, not sure how much that is though as dh pays that bill. Was £13 month 5 years ago.

Thanks for this all. Requested my MAC code over the weekend and today got email from BT offering a discount. The 02 offer I looked at was £6 less pm with 10gb more per month. Ive asked if they can match that. I await their reply with interest! I've had dealings with Talk Talk in the past and found them appalling. My dad ordered a package with them and passed away before it was installed. The nightmare I had cancelling everything and getting the money that had been paid was just awful. It put me off ever ordering anything from them.

We are with sky too and never had a problem. We are £27.25 for line rental, unlimited broadband, unlimited calls and we will also be getting free wifi later in the year where we'll be able to connect our laptop or mobile device to wireless hot-spots & at various venues throughout the UK.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/03/2012 21:07

I pay our line rental in advance, it's £120 for the year. I'm with BT.

Plusnet

We were with aol for 18 months and it was terrible for the kids gaming. We just could not do it at all. Then went with bt as a safe bet and it works really well. I know we pay alot for it but it does the job. I do weirdly find the bbc i player does give odd spells of problems like you say but not with the gaming which was our main priority really. We can run 2 xboxes and 2 computers at the same time and plus another computer when a friend is staying over. I don't think you can do that much with other companies so do beware if you require gaming. My dad has talk talk and that will be lagging and giving problems on just the x box alone. I know you do not mention gaming for yourself but it is obviously worth a lot of thought for anyone who does. We wasted so much money on a a special modem and linking cables (lan adapter) for the wii whilst on aol and when it failed to work it was awful as it was all done for my sons birthday/x mas and was a real disapointmennt and expense for nothing. It is a real job to know what to do for the best and varies in areas. Hope you find a good one Smile

I'm on plusnet. No problems at all. Fast and reliable.

undercoverPrincess · 27/03/2012 10:35

Hi, I'm with talktalk and have never had a problem. In fairness I think this has more to do with how good the actual lines are in your area than the actual connection and as these are all owned by BT and sub-let I would be surprised if you have less problems with another provider unless they have the expensive super-fast ones available.

duckdodgers · 27/03/2012 10:38

Reading these type of threads I seem to be 1 of the few that has never had a problem with Talk Talk at all!

We had a nightmare with BT Broadband that affected our service and connection for 6 months in total, being stuck between BT lines in the UK blaming BT broadband in India and vice versa. Months later and £500 compensation later I would never ever go back to BT.

Had been thinking about Sky because we pay a lot to them anyway for our TV package even though Im happy with TT but reading this doesnt seem as if Sky are good.

SigmundVoid · 27/03/2012 10:39

I'm with O2 and they are good. Got a deal on moneysavingexpert and got £80 cash back. Also an O2 customer so get £5 discount per month. Very cheap over the year! Don't have any sky channels tho

Still would rather save the money and buy a cable to watch I player etc on tv from computer

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 27/03/2012 10:41

I switched to plusnet last month from Sky, it is really cheap and the internet is fast. I was only without phone and internet for a few hours for the switch. I prepaid the years line rental so it was about 9.50 a month for the line part. We get Iplayer on the freeview box but not catch up from ITV/4oD.

You can get cashback via TopCashback for most phone providers if you switch through them too.

lisaro · 27/03/2012 10:43

I'm with Plusnet and very happy with them.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 27/03/2012 10:54

I use Smallworld Cable, which I appreciate is very local to us, but I am big fan of cable. Definitely the best Broadband locally. We have just stopped subscribing to the tv package and have landline and 10 mb internet, weekends and evening free calls for £23 inc VAT.

Engineer who came to collect TV box was complaining that he has to make do with Sky 'cos there isn't cable in his village, and he wasn't impressed.

COCKadoodledooo · 27/03/2012 11:14

another vote for Plusnet!
