My house smells

shotinfoot · 29/02/2012 12:55

of people who don't wash very often. I'm hoping you know the smell I mean.

I'm not terribly house proud but I'm averagely clean and tidy I would say (I hope Blush)

DS was sick on the sofa about 10 days ago so it might be that. It doesn't smell of sick though, just of a general dirty unclean smell.

Help!

Bins?

When I think my house smells, I empty bins, cat litter, plough through laundry (often turns up a manky gym t shirt that has been missed and stinks), make sure washing up/dishwasher is clean.

If it isn't anything like that - is your bedding etc clean.

Has your house been aired? People do smell when cooped up. Bath the dog?

We did once have a smell when I lived at home. My room stunk to high heaven! It turned out that I had taken a bag up to my room from the supermarket shop with toiletries in, and half a cabbage!

Didn't realise about the cabbage, stuck the bag under the bed and forgot about it. Never occured to anyone that there was a rotting cabbage under the bed Confused!

Bins are empty although could possibly do with a clean. We have no pets and the laundry baskets are nearly empty.

Am off to open all the windows.

Keep an eye out for stray vegetables Wink.

carpets?

sweaty people sitting on the sofa?

socks under the bed?

teenage boy?

Open your windows! Hoover and clean your sofa with Zoflora to get rid of vomit smell. Direct everyone to the bathroom...

Right, I'm off to Sainsburys later.

I've cleaned the sofa with a bicarb solution and polished, hoovered, opened all the windows and jetwashed the bin. Have emptied the vegetable rack (nothing untoward in there).

Am now going to give the bathroom floor a good scrub. And wash the cushion covers.

i think it must be the carpet. It is a smelly fabric smell rather than distinct wee/poo/sick smell.

Unwashed coats and jackets. They can carry a certain odour.

Carpets?

shotinfoot · 29/02/2012 16:43

Ooh cider, you might be onto something. The smell hits you as you walk through the door and our coat rack has definitely seen some use over the winter!

coats that have been worn in pubs can smell vile, especially if they are synthetic fibres. When pubs stopped allowing cigarettes, the stench of sweat and dirty carpets became more noticable round here, and I believe they had to start cleaning the soft furnishings more often.

sometimes i think i can smell "the pointers" in my living room. (a factory that burns bones to make glue).

actually, i cant remember if i've smelt it since we got a new couch.
