Domestic goddess sought - washing machine disaster!

Hope that this is the right place to post and that someone has sage advice to offer!

I had a jumper which had gloss paint on it, so being a clever little soul I sponged it with white spirit before putting in to the washing machine with my load of coloured washing.

Big mistake, huge!

Everything that came out of the washing machine smells of white spirit (even after a second wash) and now the washing machine drum also smells of white spirit!

I have tried putting the clothes through on the hottest setting but have now run out of ideas how to rectify. I don't want to have to buy a new machine if I can help it - this one is less than a year old (after previous machine got damaged by escaping underwire!).

Soda crystals on the hottest wash might do it?

I've tried to wash clothes soaked in white spirit before, and had the same thing, all of the clothes came out reeking of it. I got some advice and put a half litre bottle of white vinegar in the machine and sent it merrily on its way. It sorted out the problem. Grin

White spirit isn't water soluble, which is your problem.
Can you drain the machine totally and leave it with the door open for a few days to allow it to evaporate. Air the smelly clothes outside. Eventually the smell will go.

OH purchased some fabric softener and we put the clothes through again - seems to have done the trick - damn him!
