Spring cleaning - When? and How? (with kids!)

I realise this might be a tad premature but the daffodils are blooming on the banks and I feel the faintest whiff of spring in the air. My e-cloths are twitching. My finger poised in anticipation on the trigger of my Method All-Purpose. But WHEN WHEN WHEN CAN I START???

And how on earth does one spring clean?

I'll admit, until recently I have always basically avoided cleaning of any sort. But DH and I have spent the last year forming good cleaning habits. Our house is usually messy (4yo and a toddler) but (kind) friends have started to say it is clean. I'm excited to take this shit to the next level and spring feels like it could be our moment.

But, really, I don't know how spring cleaning works. I have vague memories of my parents taking everything off the welsh dresser once a year for a good hot soapy wash, and a very clear recollection of getting 50p to blacken the fireplaces annually, but I can't for the life of me remember what else there is to do. And once I know, how do we do it with the kids around? My 18 mo daughter tends to systematically undo everything we do as and when we do it. Does one get a sitter for such occasions? Should we employ the grandparents for this task? How long will/should it take?

All advice gratefully appreciated.

What about coming up with your own plan based on this website Complete Spring Cleaning Checklist.

As to the when... Well I have no idea as the mother of a toddler the only thing I can think of is taking a couple of days of work, but keep DS in nursery. But that makes me feel a bit mean.
