Tedium alert - has anyone got a cheapish carpet steam cleaner thing?

we have pale carpet. everywhere. it was not our idea - we inherited it from the previous owners. our budget does not stretch to new floors, plus I have become rather fond of the lovely warm feel. anyway, we hire a carpet steamer, which was great, but it needs redoing again. i could hire one again, but if this is going to be a regular thing it might be more cost effective to buy one. has anyone got a carpet steamer, and are they as good as the badass industrial ones you hire?

Steam doesn't clean a carpet. It will merely refresh it. You need a proper carpet cleaner that washes your carpet and, most importantly, vacuum the dirty water a way. A steam cleaner will not do this because it doesn't vacuum the soiled water away.

Also came on here to research buying vs hiring a carpet cleaner but its clearly too boring a subject for MNers to respond to. Will have to look elsewhere for info. Have you been able to make decision OP?

nooooo - I don't know anyone who's got one.
in fact i'm not sure i know anyone who's got carpets anymore
i'm reluctant to spend £££ without getting a recommendation as to whether they actually do the trick.
OTOH the one we hired from HSS was the business, but it's a bit of a faff to book and collect, and you need to buy the solution separately, so it adds up.

I don't own a carpet cleaner, but get a professional in about once a year.
