We have had a jute type rug, the ikea one, in our lounge for around 3 months. We have a dog, a labradoodle, a big one, who isn't really a smelly dog HOWEVER the rug now reeks.

Despite regularly hoovering it and also taking it outside and giving it a beating when i am sitting on the sofa at night i can smell it. It doesnt really smell like the dog, that i could cope with but its like 'cheesy feet'. But it is the dog, none of us have smelly feet!

I love how it looks but i can't cope with the smell.

Not sure what i could put on it.

Tempted to bin it but id want another and there is no way i could keep the dog off it, that is unrealistic. House is way too small for him to avoid it.

Anyone???

Brush loads of bicarb on it, leave over night and Hoover out.

You do the shake n vac to put the freshness back. When your carpet needs cleaning, your room does too, do the shake n vac, ooooooh oooooh ooooh.

Shake and vac not a bit dodgy with dogs? i thought it might irritate dogs? tho his smell is irritating me!!!

will try bicarb, next step bin... :(

Sorry, I was being daft. I have used it though and the dog seems fine.

problem is the jute is like a fecking loofa, so the dog is exfoliating himself daily on this rug, yeuk!

you say jute. could you take it outside, hose it down, leave in the sun to dry?

Lakeland sells bottles of spray stuff called Odour Out - a bit like Febreeze - I used it on our living room rug when the dog peed on it and I couldn't get rid of the smell. It worked really well - nice flowery smell, and when it faded, the pee smell had gone too. It costs about a fiver.

bicarb with a bit of lavender oil in it shifts smells(rub in leave over night) not sure it ok round pets though
