Do you really have to clean your dishwasher?

Hello,

We've had our dishwasher now for 4 months and yesterday DH came come from supermarket with a Finish dishwasher cleaning bottle. You run the machine on empty with this bottle in and the cleaner leaks out and it promises to remove grease, limescale etc etc.

Thats fine, but the bottle says you need to do it once a month (new bottle each time) is this a marketing trick, or true? We run dishwasher most days I'd say, I'd always thought it would clean itself, hot water and dishwasher tablets running around inside it every day!

Am I a dirty skank? Do you clean your dishwasher monthly? I don't mind doing it if we have to just concerned I'm getting taken for a ride by them saying monthly as it's obviously financially in their interest to get you to do it as often as possible!

me too

I scrape and rinse if necessary, but I am a very good cook so there is seldom anything left on the plate.

DP is nearly as good.

I brush and cold-rinse scrambled egg or custard pans, wipe out fat with kitchen roll, and rinse mashed potato pans.

Bugger it now I have to go see the new star thing film in the cinema, what a waste of a date
And now he is delighted that it has been confirmed I am neurotic re cleaning the dishwasher

I may also have realised why the seals on our fridges/freezers never last Blush I might be finding plenty of free time soon Grin

We didn't...until the dishwasher blocked and emptied all over my floor!! It is now cleaned monthly with either the bottle (lazy) or by removing all the bits and scrubbing them.

sounds to me like it was clogged filters rather than general cleaning needed.
