Can you help me choose a new iron please?

I was going through the usual pile of Sunday ironing and my iron is on it's last legs. Can you recommend a steam iron to me? I don't want one with a big reservoir on the bottom -I think they are called steam generators- just a good, ordinary iron.

Also what is the black stuff on the bottom and how can I get rid of it?

TIA

I'm not an ironer myself, but DS has to iron a load of stuff for a show he's in. At least it'll get him to Hoover so he can iron on the floorGrin

I ended up doing some of DSs ironing, which reminded me how much I dislike ironingSad
I hope you get an answer soon. I wouldn't know where to start shopping for an iron, mine's a JML one (from Argos) and I've had it for 10 yearsBlush

I've got a Phillips GC2800 after seeing it recommended by Which?

I bought it as a replacement to one of those steam generators so I thought it would be a bit of a step back but I've been pleasantly surprised.

Not sure if the exact model is still available but others in the 28.. series seem to have good reviews in Amazon and they're only about £30. HTH Smile

What's a "steam generator"? Sounds like something from the industrial revolutionGrin

It's a reservoire that is attached to the iron so you don't have to keep filling it up. Great but massive and I have nowhere to put one.

I know our current one is a Phillips. It was good 10 years ago when my DH carefully chose it he took ages perving over the iron section Grin. Maybe Phillips just make good irons?!

It would seem so. Thanks.
