We have a hotpoint fridge freezer and last night the light didnt go off when the door was shut so I have took the bulb out and the fridge has stayed cold now. But has anyone had a similar problem and am I able to fix it? I want to try and avoid ringing hotpoint if possible as im sure they'll send someone out for a charge of £50 and want to try and avoid this. tia :)

there might be a sensor switch in the doorframe, that is pushed in when the door is shut. Find it and see what happens when you press the springy bit in with your finger. If it is a concealed one operated by a magnet you will be stumped.

On some FFs (certainly my Bosch) the cooling fan will not come on if the switch thinks the door is open, so that needs fixing urgently. Just possibly the door might have gone out of alignment if the hinges have sagged or somone walked into the open door. The switch would be cheap but you would have a call-out charge. See if anyone recommends a local repairman.

If the switch is working and there is a fault in the electronic PCB (might be under the top panel) it could be quite an expensive repair.

Errm, can I just ask how you know the light didn't go out when the door was closed? Not being cheeky, just interested. Grin

when you shut the door it pushes the switch at the top of the fridge so im thinking its the switch that needs replacing as the fridge is still working fine.

Grin I knew because i opened the fridge in the morning and the food near the bulb was warm so i pressed the switch and it didnt go off so for the time being ive took out the bulb and its fine but will have to replace the switch, will give them a ring today.

Also only opened the thread to find out how you know. Had visions of you shutting yourself in there to check.

The light has absolutely nothing to do with how the fridge works, it's just there so you can see inside it

tab

That might be true on yours, it isn't true on mine.
