My mum gave me a Dyson - but I cant work it!!

I have the instruction manual but why is the suction happening from the top, not the bottom. Too scared to tell Mum!

Is the main up right section fully clicked into place? Sorry not explaining it well. Is it fully engaged in upright position? Gah too early in morning.

It wont suck from the bottom unless you recline it! As lost said, im sure recline isnt the right word but you know what i mean!
