Towels - white or coloured

We need to get some new towels, we've currently got one elderly white set which is looking a bit worse for wear and is constantly in the wash.

I was going to get white again, but there are quite a lot of nice neutral coloured towels around at the moment (eg "stone" or "smoke") and I wondered if those would wear better. They would go quite nicely with current greeny grey bathroom. But will they look naff in a few years' time (and not go with future paint colours) and should I just play safe and stick to white... ?

Ooh, thanks notcitrus I quite like the look of some Christys ones but wanted to see the colour in real life before ordering. Will pop to TK maxx at the weekend.

Urgh... IMO those towels would be ideal for a rugby playing student. Most of these 'neutrals' look like 'rarely washed mud' - anyone who's been in the laundry room of student halls will know those hues were around long before they became fashionable Grin

Grin Grimma you have a point. I think it would have to be a colour which was definitely a colour and so couldn't be mistaken for "unwashed towel grey" ... so eg I'd want something with a bit of green in it ... let's see how they look in real life.

Dunelm mill have some nice towels. We have some Egyptian Cotton ones from there which have lasted well.

We have thick white Christy towels. Used every other week for a week and two years on they are still white. And I'm not very good at keeping things white usually!!

Also have some that probably could be described as stone and I love those too.

Latsia · 06/01/2012 22:53

House of Fraser sale is also good for Christy btw.

White!
White wash is easy! I use persil liquid in the little cup inside drum and pop a squirt of bleach in with the laundry liquid.
And softener as usual etc.
Voila white white every wash

White hand towels here.
I got 12 from Costco, so I have them in a basket in the downstairs loo, except 4 that live upstairs. The bathroom ones have press-studs sewn on to make them into a 'roller towel' to fit round the radiator/towel rail.

They do show the dirt, especially as DS softens the dirt with water and cleans his hands on the towel Grin Hmm. And DC cover them in toothpaste.

Hot wash+Ariel stain remover+Daz. Sorted!

I always go with white towels.I purchased towels from towel hub few years ago.But these towels still look good.

white towels

Ours are basically beige. They don't shoe up the dirt and they are therefore Fab, I'm glad we didn't get white!

Hopandaskip · 27/10/2012 04:25

Ours are colour coded to make things easy for DH and kids. Boys have blue and green respectively. DH has pale gold, I have a brown. Guest towels are brown and eau de nil stripes and swim/beach towels are yellow. Bed linens are colour coded too.

Pannacotta · 27/10/2012 12:06

I used to get white but with three males in the house I dont bother anymore.
I use colour coded in various neutral colours, pale and dark grey, pale blue and darker blue.
I have found these good, they are a bit rougher than most which I prefer.

I always go for white or coffee - means you don't need a separate wash load like you would for a strong colour.

Had a red & white bathroom years ago which was fab but made the mistake of buying red towels which were very expensive as they weren't easily available back then. However, my DH always landed up with a stubble full of red fluff - soon ditched for white!

fussychica · 27/10/2012 18:25

OOoooh rough towels - lovely - hate soft towels, they always feel dirty to me. Thanks for the link Pannacotta.

Is it just me, or do white towels just show the bit where someone has dried their inadequately wiped arse?

Now I come to think of it, it's probably a good thing, so you know to bin it, whereas the disguise afforded by deeper shades...
