40 weeks, just setting up moses basket etc in preparation. Have realised that the replacement mattress I bought is too long for the bloody basket. Ordinarily I'd hotfoot it to Mothercare and beg to exchange it for the correct one even though I've had it 2 months but I'm not very mobile, unable to drive etc and DH is working and not near a branch. So realistically not much chance of replacing it till after baby arrives and I can move again.

The original mattress has a wipe clean cover, was bought new for DD1 who used it for about 3 months (4 years ago) but then it went in the loft. Basket was sealed in several thick bin bags/rubble sacks and unwrapped recently when we brought it down.

Would you reuse it? It's the manky, dusty loft bit that bothers me. I may be slightly panicking, I'll accept. This is truly last minute stuff and I thought I was all ready...

God yes I'd reuse it - just wipe it with some disinfectant.

It won't release noxious, flea-ridden loft fumes over her every time she takes a breath?

Hmm Are you sure this is your second baby? Grin

No of course not. You big nelly.

Could you not just fold one end of the two big mattress over if you are really wibbling?

BTW you know that wibbling and nesting is a very good sign don't you? :)

Don't worry, when I get overly stressed about things for DD I just remind myself that children have survived for centuries in terrible unsanitary conditions with far more dangerous contraptions around them then any of our children will ever face! Grin

I would just wipe it down with a dettol/milton type solution, and give it a good air so that there is no musty smell! You will be putting sheets over it as well!

Incidentally why are we not supposed to re use mattresses for babies? Is it about germs or the level of support?

Ooh exciting times having a baby - not that I'm ready for number 2 just yet Smile

I think it's about fire risk/germs AND level of support. Also known as 'the parental guilt triangle.' Grin

Pop the baby in a drawer with your knickers. There are no known regulations on knicker drawers relating to babies Grin

Do you know, I really did consider that for my DD, not with knickers would suffocate the poor mite with the size of those bloomers but to make a drawer the 'moses' basket, when she started to move around a bit and make the basket wobble. I didn't have the nerve in the end pfb and all that, but I really think its the perfect size and shape!!

Maybe baby no2 Grin
