Washing and superstition?

BlackCatinaSantaHat · 23/12/2011 22:17

I was told once that if you do washing on a certain day / days of the year it brings bad luck. (think it may have been New years day).

Has anyone else heard anything like this OR do you think it is not true?

If yes which days of the year?

I am personally a bit sceptical but interested to hear from other people.

Love the poem Angels. Wonder what happens if you put some washing on every day though :o

ginmakesitallok · 29/12/2011 09:01

I.m not at all superstitious but we always make sure rubbish is put out before 12 nye, and if there are visitors in the house one of them will go outside before the bells to be our first foot.

ginmakesitallok · 29/12/2011 09:02

Oh- all old calendars have to be down before new years day too

BlackCatLookingForwardToSpring · 01/01/2012 09:49

Just thought I'd bump this for today Wink

Meglet · 01/01/2012 09:57

I remembered I'm not allowed to wash anything today. If you wash things on New Years Day you wash a family member away.

I usually forget. My elderly g-pig was on her last legs last year though Blush.

slowburner · 01/01/2012 18:19

Oops. Have never ever heard this in all my 33 years.

And I'm superstitious. DH did the dark wash cos I told him too.

blackoutthexmaslights · 01/01/2012 18:23

well today has been the first day that i've done any washing on NYD

am i'm feeling really uneasy about it Confused

ThePathanKhansWitch · 01/01/2012 18:25

Never leave baby clothes out on the line at night, the fairy people will come and take their souls. .

ThePathanKhansWitch · 01/01/2012 18:26

meg that has quite cheered me up! i've done three big loads, so that should see orf a few dozen at least, d'ya think?.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/01/2012 18:32

I have done most of the things in that link today!! Shock

I've done 6 loads of washing (killed 6 people Hmm), and I've worn old clothes (bringing poverty on me), thrown about 10 bags of crap out (I will lose and not gain) and done no 'work' (ensuring that my work will be unsuccessful this year).

I may have done others too... Hmm

chipmunksex · 01/01/2012 18:38

I've done 2 loads already! Grin Hmm

To2012AndBeyondTheLimits · 01/01/2012 19:15

Bit late to learn this now...
have killed off whole family with whole day of cleaning

abbierhodes · 02/01/2012 01:09

Chinese New Year has even more superstitions...we have to open all doors and windows at midnight. And there's no sweeping on New Years Day. The noise thing is the same...that's what all the firecrackers are about- to ward off evil spirits/bad energy.

KellyBrookes29 · 01/01/2013 11:43

Lol. I'm Not a supersticious person but my MIL is and makes me promise not to wash on new years day. Usually I will cross my fingers and do it anyway but my husband is petrified something will happen! I hate not being able to wash! With 7 people in our home its amazing how a pile can quickly build! Maybe I'll wait till he goes out and get a load in quick! Lol.. Happy New Year Everyone :-D

VerySmallSqueak · 01/01/2013 11:47

I'll be doing no washing today.

But that's because my washing machine died yesterday.

Which is definitely bad luck as we're skint after Christmas and I've a basket full of dirty washing and a machine full of half washed sopping wet washing.

What does that predict for me for the coming year? Confused

Bunbaker · 01/01/2013 11:54

I have some washing in the machine and the next lot waiting to go in. It is sunny and windy here today and is great drying weather for drying bedding. I'm not superstitious.

specialsubject · 01/01/2013 16:54

this should be very helpful to all those who were fretting about the end of the world and now need some new crap stuff to worry about.

pepperrabbitanddesultorytinsel · 01/01/2013 16:59

Well I just had to wash all the spare room bedding as DH had to sleep in there last night, and in his drunken stupor delicate condition, he took an entire bowl of dry roasted peanuts with him Angry.
I think he feels correctly like he'll never get lucky again...
Is that the same do you think? Grin

Glitterknickaz · 01/01/2013 17:06

Oh shit.
I've washed me sheets. They minged.

penguinplease · 01/01/2013 17:06

oh crappage. I have done loads of washing today, its been perfect clothes drying weather.. dammit

Oreocrumbs · 01/01/2013 18:27

Bugger I did washing too.

And I was the first foot. I wouldn't care but DP was with me, and he had his wages on him, so he would have had a 'gift' Confused.

Ah well if this turns out to be a bad year, I will know how to correct things for 2014 Grin.

MeloneyA · 19/11/2018 01:52

Hello everyone from Mobile, Al. I was reading about the Washing Superstition and had to add ours. In our family you don't wash on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve or New Years Day. I know that this has been going on since 1940 at least. My poor Grandmother was convinced that since she washed my Aunt's diapers on New Year's Eve or Day, she thought that she killed her Grandmother.

Beautga · 01/01/2019 13:03

I am not washing any clothes i am going to spend the new year chilling

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 01/01/2019 16:11

Lower Rhine / Westfalia area:
You don't wash from Christmas Eve Eve (i. e. 23rd) until Epiphany, because the "Wilde Jagd" is out - apparently you catch ghosts or hinder them riding or something.
And you don't wash in the week before Easter (Karwoche) because somebody close to you will die.

I wonder if this type of superstition was brought up by housewifes to give them a break?

Cocomelon112233 · 30/12/2024 00:15

Right just found this as was Googling the question.
I’m not normally superstitious however, my gran posted me a really cryptic note 3 years ago stating not do washing on New Years Day in a warning and I ignored her and did washing. That year she died so I feel as if maybe superstitions might have some heed and feel super guilty encase I was the reason she passed suddenly…
