Which miele vacuum cleaner? (cylinder)

I'm thinking about thinking about splashing out on a good vacuum cleaner as am sick of the one I use at the moment not really picking up much.

Having read previous threads I've narrowed it down to Miele cat and dog, or Miele 5211.

I don't have a cat or a dog. But a have a little girl who likes to throw food around liberally and smush it into the carpet.

It would be used mainly on carpet. I want something that's a super sucker. Do I look for wattage for that?

Will the 5211 work ok on carpet, or should i get the cat and dog which seems to have some extra brush contraption with it. Other than that what IS the difference between them? There also appears to be two models of cat and dog - what's the difference between THEM?

Do cylinders work ok on carpets anyway? Have only used them on hard floors before.

It's all so confusing in the jungle of uprights and cylinders and attachments. Please help.

I am interested in this threat for sure as I am looking at miele cylinder as well.

I don't have much idea with miele 5211 as I was looking at the 'cat and dog' model. The two different models for 'cat and dog' is the power output. From memory, one is 2000W and the other is 2200W, the higher power supposes to have more powerful suction. Also, one of them has all the attachments under the hoods in the main body and the other one doesn't seem to come with attachments. But this is based on my observation when I was in the shops.

I was told by friends that the vacuum bags can be expensive and read in some other forum that Tesco vacuum bag works well too (but don't quote on me). Also if you are allergy sufferer, might be worthwhile consider a miele with hepa filter.

I hope you find this useful and let me know how you get on Wink

Thanks Meghan - I've also read (somewhere) that unbranded bags from amazon fit, and that the bags don't need changing that often anyway.

Anyone else care to impart your views?

I have the 5211, works very well on both carpets and hard floors. If you turn it up to max suction then it will drag your carpets up in the corners if you are not careful! It seems to be surviving the abuse of 2 small children and the solid fuel stove which I hoover out every week or so so a lot of ash. It has the normal attachments (little brush thingy, sofa thingy and narrow tube). I have yet to venture into unbranded bags as I found a job lot of the proper ones when I bought the thing and am just onto the last packet, they last absolutely ages. Can't find the bloody website I got them from now though Angry Plus I'm easily confused about what filters to buy and the Miele brand bags come with both filtesr in so you can change them each time you start a new pack of bags.

I have the black one and it's great. I have a 10 year old one for upstairs and it's still going strong.

wellthatsdoneit · 17/12/2011 17:53

Is the black one the 5211 valiumredhead?

Glad t hear it works well on carpets Indith - do you find carpets are any problems when it comes to moving it around on its little wheels as you vacuum?

Might just go for the cheaper one then (5211) - is the same wattage as the more expensive cat and dog, but doesn't come with the turbo brush (which I think you can buy separately anyway).

Yes it's the 5211 and I wouldn't bother paying extra for the turbo brush - we have it and never use it. They have fab suction anyway.

i have a yellow one. have had it for 10 years and it is brill. don't know model and can't be arsed moving from sofa too check

the only thing i'd say is that i tried unbranded bags and wouldn't buy them again.

I order the bags on line.
