or do lemon fairy dishwasher tabs make all your dishes smell lemony??

My DH can't smell it but i am fed up of eating off plates that smell like lemon detergent, and i can smell it from the oven when a baking tray is in there heating up. it's horrible.

Ordered 'original' finish tabs from sainsburys delivery and bloody LEMON ones were subsituted!!! I didn't accept them.

Does anybody else smell the lemon on the dishes, or am i going mad (my DH thinks i am).

Yes, it's minging. I accidentally got lemon ones and they stink, especially the kids' plastic bowls.
I can also taste the stuff chopping boards are cleaned with when eating chopped lettice in cafes and pubs.

ImogensMother · 17/01/2012 13:37

Yes, it seems to be the new ones. DH and daughter don't seem to be able to smell or taste it, but I can. Makes me feel quite ill and I can't eat food off dishes washed in it, or that has been cooked in pans washed in it.

I have had to re-wash everything before use, and on plastic stuff just can't get rid of the smell/taste. Have had to stop using them and bought a different brand instead (not lemon).

ImogensMother · 17/01/2012 13:38

PS I am so glad it is not just me! Was worried something was wrong with me as DH and daughter don't notice anything wrong!

LordOfTheFlies · 17/01/2012 23:18

I bought something (chrome whisk or similar) that had on the label 'not to use lemon detergent because it tarnishes'.

Ponders · 17/01/2012 23:23

I use ecover, they're surprisingly good at cleaning & also not harsh on glasses etc. expensive though but often on multibuy, worth stocking up

(last time I had Finish ones they never dissolved properly - I only ever use 30-min low temp wash, ecover dissolve fine)

gsc · 21/01/2012 09:25

+1 for ecover, been using them for years. tried finish when they were on offer once- no difference in cleaning, but that lemony smell puts me off

DazR · 21/01/2012 21:46

sainsburys basic ones work fine for us

CointreauVersial · 21/01/2012 21:51

Tesco Daisy here too. My dishwasher drawer doesn't open properly, so tablets are no good - I find them stuck in the drawer, half-digested, at the end of the cycle.

I have used all sorts, and have not noticed any better performance with the pricy stuff.

I've been having this problem with Fairy tabs too. My food tastes of soap though, not lemon. Anything plastic or non stick stinks and tastes of soap so I have to was lots of stuff by hand.

I'll try some of the cheaper powders.

PigletJohn · 23/02/2013 10:13

If you have a problem with the tablet dissolving, it is usually because the compartment door did not snap open correctly. Occasionally it is due to a machine fault, but surprisingly often because a large utensil or baking tray is either obstructing the door, or blocking the water jets from getting at the tablet.

Either way, dropping the tablet into the cutlery basket will fix it.

MonaLotte · 23/02/2013 10:16

I hate it it's a horrible smell. I bought them by accident and the kitchen smelled awful! We use finish powerball now.

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/02/2013 10:17

Lidl W5 ones, the plain ones. I only use half a tablet per wash - good results every time and no smell Smile

I had the same problem with the lemony ones, especially when heating ovendishes washed in it in the oven, bleurgh!

SuckingDiesel · 23/02/2013 10:17

Tesco or Sainsbury's basics DW tablets here and they do the job just as well as the expensive Fairy/Finish ones we used to buy.

Lidl dishwashwe tabs - a fraction of the price of others and very effective

fussychica · 23/02/2013 14:10

Even lemon ones abroad are the same - leave everything lemony - only used once and gave the rest away. Since coming back haven't had a dishwasher and I really miss it Sad - roll on new kitchen.

imip · 23/02/2013 15:08

Ecover here. I buy the big 70 pack when they are on special, usually 1/3 off.

cobminor · 13/03/2017 12:30

Hi,

We have an old Bosch dishwasher (11 yrs.), the circulation pump broke a few weeks ago so I got a 2nd. hand one from ebay and replaced it, so far so good. This last week my wife has complained that the Tea stains are not coming off the cups. I at first thought that the pump was weak and not giving enough pressure, that was OK. I tried the longest hottest cycle and it made no difference. I then realised that our liquid was different, apparently finish is gel now, I thought that it might not have a bleach in (I never checked) so I tried Aldi Magnum tablets (good on Which), the stains came off on a low temp (45) short cycle. Given that these tabs are among the cheapest I don't thing we will be buying any more premium products for dishwashing.

There are no longer any phosphates being added to detergents, if you look at the labels they contain a substitute which is not as good.

Phosphates used to be the ingredient that actually made things clean. Without them people are noticing a build up of grease in their machines and stuff not being washed properly. It is the same as with laundry not being as bright, phosphates again.

Our dishwasher had a little space in the top basket to put tablets. Powder goes in the dispenser in the door.
If I accidentally drop the tablet I leave it on the bottom and it works just as well as if it was in the right place.

bingohandjob · 18/03/2017 19:07

I've never used them as my mum warned me about them years ago. They did indeed leave a lemony whiff. The basic Fairy ones are great though.

PrettyDarnQuick · 18/03/2017 19:30

I won't buy Fairy for this reason- it's utterly rank.
