Really stinky carpet

My dh vax'd the lounge carpet a couple of days ago. It seemed to dry fairly quickly, but yesterday when I came in from work the musty/damp smell from it nearly knocked me out...it was revolting!

I've had all of the window's open today and sprinkled neutradol powder on it for a few hours with no success, then sprinkled a whole tub of bicarbonate on it, again with no success:(

I've been burning some Yankee candles which have masked the smell enough to be in the room.

Any ideas on how to stop my lounge smelling like someone has left thousands of dirty football boots in it???

it is probably damp. maybe the underlay too.

if you can run the machine over it, just sucking, it may get some water out

also leave the windows wide open to get plenty of airflow. Putting the heating on will not help dry a carpet, since the warm air rises above it. You need lots of ventialtion.
