How do you rid your house of dog smell

My friend moved into her new house this weekend and it reeks of the previous owner's five dogs. They have tried febreze and shake & vac type things on the carpets to no avail. Their poor cat is going crazy from the smell, and I think they are too.

Does anyone have any magic tips to make their house smell clean and fresh?

TIA

Wash down everything, walls, skirting etc. Sprinkle carpets with bicarbonate of soda, leave for an hour and then hoover up. Air the house out as much as possible. Febreze candles are quite good at disguising the stench. If it can be put in the washing machine, wash it.

carpet shampooer will help.

bur carpets where dogs used to lie (e.g. next to door, fire, armchair) may need to be binned.

I would recommend paying for your carpets to be professionally cleaned.

Our house stank of dog when we moved in and it cost me £130 to have two double bedrooms, one single bedroom, large sitting room, hall, stairs and landing done. I would suggest calling a few local companies as the quotes did vary quite a lot.

It was worth every penny, the carpets looked so much better, it lifted the pile and it got rid of the dog smells. I also found I had to wash down the doors and skirting boards with hot water and bleach, although they did still require re-painting.

Oh, I also made sure I hoovered along all of the skirting boards with the nozzle atachment as it was suprising how much dog hair collected there.

Thanks for your advice - I will pass on all of this to my friend.

And not buy a house that has housed dogs on my current quest to find somewhere new to live!

The only way ime is to replace the carpets, no amount of Febreeze gets rid of it.

I am a landlady and every single time we let pet owners rent the house we end up having to recarpet for the next tenants. That is really the only thing that works.
