Had a new fire fitted, apparently there was the most huge crows nest up there, which is now cleared but now we have flies! Why & help please.

The fitter couldn't believe how big the nest was but totally cleared so no problems there. Do you think there could have been something dead up there and therefore maggots/flies. Im hoping for a seriously cold snap to (fingers crossed) get rid of the little blighters. Has anyone else had this? What did you do? We've got the fitter coming back to fix a cowl to the chimney too.

We had this in a place we only went occasionally in Ireland. And it had been freezing - 17 so the flies had to come from something organic. There is probably still something dead up there, I'm sorry to say. That was the reason for a plague of flies coming out of our fireplace, which was not in use, and had cowl fitted on top. You need to check the sides or is there another branch to the chimney which was stopped off? We found a dead crow.

most likely something dead. The fire will dry it all out or the maggots will eat it so eventually it will be gone. Might be pockets of bird muck on a ledge or crack?

there is also a variety of fly that comes into houses as winter approaches, hoping to shelter from the cold. You usually find them crawling round windowsills when they have got in through a crack. I have had those and hoovered them up, I don't know how to stop them. I believe they can smell cracks that have been used before.
