painting over tar stained ceilings

any tips from clever mnetters about what paint is best and how to make sure the stains wont come through will be great thank you!

You really have to clean it first. It will seep through if you just paint over it.

you can just wash it off

I thought the stains would come through unless something tougher was put on it?

you can paint stain with gloss paint then when its dry overpaint with emulsion. Stain will not come through the gloss paint. i have done this with some old stains on my ceiling.
