im umming and arring about whether to get the carpets in my new house professionally cleaned or whether I should clean them myself, has anyone done this themselves? Was the finish as good? Did you hire or buy a cleaner? Or should I just pay someone to do it?

Had a pro in. Most stains were removed except the Irn Bru one which is notorious Sad. Only advice is to do a proper Hoover before they come as the chap only had the wet steam cleaner and didn't get the dust out first. I had to do this myself afterwards! I paid @£35 for 1 room and tiny hall which was their minimum charge.

Do it yourself. You'll be much more thorough than anyone else. Hire in a rug doctor or buy one. I bought one for £75 and I use it 3-4 times a year and it works brilliantly. It can't do stairs though.
