Sticky iron.. Is it fixable?

My iron has got some rusty coloured gunk in spots on the bottom of it. It looks like it's been splattered with treacle. It leaves little dots on clothes too which is quite annoying.

Can I fix it? DH thinks this means it is knackered and the gunk will keep coming back but hmm DH and matters laundry are not.. Intimately acquainted.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Turn it as hot as it will go and iron onto a linen tea towel. If necessary, crumple up the tea towel and carefully scrub at the bottom of the iron. Everything should come off onto the cloth.

Lakeland, Hot Iron Cleaner - it is fantastic!!!!

Yes, second the Lakeland stuff, it's brilliant. The iron just glides afterwards.
