Choosing a cleaner

We currently use a cleaner through an agency, and I have become unhappy with the standard reached so have asked neighbours and found a cleaner through a recommendation. However, the cleaner is self-employed. I wondered if anyone knew what was reasonable to ask for in terms of assurances (as much as one ever can) that the cleaner is honest etc. I like her and she seemed trustworthy but in essence I only know her first name and mobile no at the moment.

I thought of:

  1. Proof of address
  2. References

Am I making a meal of this? As we went through an agency before, this is new to me, and I don't want to hand house keys over to someone who I know nothing of. Please say if you think I am being paranoid!
