Removing adhesive stickers (safety latches) - which solvent to use?

I'm just trying to get some safety catches off, and the big fat adhesive pads have been torn in half, and mostly left behind. Is there anything to get rid of them, like rubbing alcohol, or will it just be a matter of wetting them and using the old elbow grease to pick them off bit by bit?

Oh, dear, WD40 didn't work today, so will have to go with nail varnish remover tomorrow! If not, then a quick trip to Lakeland...

Okay, used nail varnish remover and elbow grease, which was a bit fiddly, but did the job.

Infuriatingly, I used white spirit later in the day, and am convinced that would have done the job better... But too late!
