Washing Machine - it's making my clothes dirty!

New washing machine - about 4 months old - last few loads have come out with dark greasy marks all over them which weren't there when they went in. Have called engineer out (coming on Thursday) but I have lots more washing to do and am loathe to put any more on until he comes.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

I've only had this when something greasy (maybe overalls) had been washed in a launderette machine before my load went in. Could your DCs have been helpful? My 'tidying' DD enabled me to do a whites wash with a duster some years ago, with hideous results!
If it seems to be making strange noises I'd leave it to the engineer just in case the grease is coming from something inside the 'works' but there's not a lot that uses heavy grease other than maybe the bearings - and if they are going it will probably make noises.
If you look at the instruction book and drain the pump you will see if there is any greasy deposit in the water in there. It may be worth trying a hot wash or two with an old towel in the drum to try and clean it up.
I'm no expert so these are only suggestions based on what I'd do - as engineers tend to be expensive, but sometimes only they can solve the problem. At least if it is mechanical/or the machine at fault it will probably be covered under the guarantee.
Fingers crossed for you.

Try a couple of hot washes with half a bag of soda crystals in the drum?

wandawings · 26/07/2011 19:30

Do you use a lot of fabric conditioner? Since I've stopped using it, I've had no more greasy marks on my washing.

MrsFruitcake · 27/07/2011 17:30

Wanda, funnily enough, I haven't been using it for a while, so it can't be that.

Is it one of the machines called something-moon? Dyson Moon, Hoover Moon...? I'm sure I remember some machine or other being on Watch Dog because they were leaving black marks on washing and it has something to do with mouldy door rubber parts.

Or of course you may have some sort of perfectly normal machine, with nothing to do with Moon in its name.

Feel free to ignore my random memory... Grin

I get those if I wash something big (or just too much in one load) that blocks the drainage.

MrsFruitcake · 28/07/2011 08:29

Maybe I'm over-filling it?

It's a Blomberg Four - couldn't afford a Dyson!

do you use liquid detergent? I switched to bio powder as the liquids were making the drum slimy and then left marks on my washing. I also regularly clean out the dispenser drawer, the rubber seal and do an empty 90 degree wash with detergent.

Engineer came and...the washing machine has broken! It's grease from inside the machine somewhere which is leaking out. It won't come out of anything it get onto - so I know have to claim for my damaged clothes. Engineer said it was extremely unusual for it to happen in a machine so new.

Now I have a battle - they want to repair, I want a new machine!

Lucky for you your engineer came out.

We booked the washing machine repair for Thursday 28 July with Real Domestic Appliances, trying to "stay local". I took that day off work, but no one came, despite two reminder calls from me. When I phoned the next day to ask why, they said that they had knocked on the door, but no-one answered. Good grief - why take a precious day off work to repair the washing machine, and then not answer the door when they arrive?! Avoid them if you can:

Would you recommend yours?

PS Good luck with the battle - just don't budge!
