American Style Fridge-Freezer WITHOUT water cooler/ice maker

Hi, we're about to move in to a house which has space for an american style fridge-freezer, (i think approx 91cm wide) but I know that we wouldnt use the water/ice dispenser so would really rather have this space for frozen goods. I know that often half the freezer space is lost to the water dispenser. Does anybody know of a brand that comes without the dispenser?

Often brands do both versions. We have a Samsung one with ice and water (I've been surprised just how much we use it) but they also did one without.

The water and ice dispenser in a house with small children leads to endless puddles on the kitchen floor. Make sure the one you buy is frost free too. Are you considering a side-by-side style? Very handy indeed.

Have a look at this site for inspiration. Some Samsung and LG models come frost free and without the water/ice dispenser.

Growing up we had an enormous American style fridge. I miss having the ice/water part so much! There is nothing nice than having on tap ice water and ice cubes. I wish we had space for one.

Personally, I would get one that has ice/water maker.

I have an LG without the dispenser (like you I thought it was an utter waste of freezer space) & it's been fab so far. (We do keep bottles of water in the fridge but hardly ever use ice anyway)

Mine only cost £500-550 (can't remember exactly) - it has different handles so was prob discontinued.

Anyway google the model number & see what prices come up. LG have a very good rep for fridge-freezers (much better than Samsung)

I have a Fisher and Paykel one, like this.

Its bloody brilliant.

If you ever have plumbing problems with the pipes leading to the fridge it is a beast of a job to get them fixed and you are without a fridge and freezer for the duration of the work, which often involves tearing pipes out from behind cabinetry, certainly turning off and pulling out the fridge itself. Plus you have the nightmare of small children flooding the floor, dropping ice cubes everywhere (not nice to skid on)..

Thanks for all your help. Too much orange juice has destroyed my teeth already and they can no longer cope with ice!! Plus the current owners haven't plummed theirs in, so i dont think that there are pipes to that part of the kitchen. Really like the LG ones...now just need to justify the cost!

AVOID SAMSUNG! please. Trust me.

Can i ask whats so bad about Samsung bibbity? I see that both you and Ponders feel the same. I always thought that fridges were fairly fool-proof and lasted forever?

well I know of 2 or 3 people whose big Samsungs packed up on them

& on the MN "try-a-Samsung" thread a couple of people brought up the problems they'd had

samsung say it doesn't happen any more...

I just hate my samsung ff and it has packed up twice in about 5 years.

Can't wait to go back to a tall, thin fridge freezer actually. American style side by side are not for me.

I've had my LG one 2 years so far with no probs-touch-wood, bibbity

previously had separate under-counter fridge & freezer, approx equivalent in size to a tall thin one, & cramming stuff into them was a nightmare. I occasionally have rearrangement issues with the freezer part of mine, but only occasionally; & the fridge is a dream, esp for things like cartons of juice & milk & other tall stuff

I have to say, that i would prefer a 'tall-thin' one, but the current owners have specifically left space for an 'American style' one. If we went tall and thin there would be a big space down the side that would look silly. It's a shame really.

fwiw there is a big space down the side of mine too - I have a 40cm Billy (with top shelf) there with cookbooks, box files, teatowels & stuff

but honestly, cs, the space in the American-style is amazing, I can always fit everything in & I know I wouldn't in a tall narrow one

I will never go back to anything smaller myself. The cost is so worth it. The side by side freezer/fridge, with everything easy to see particularly on the freezer shelves is fantastic.

We've had our LG one for over five years now. DH was adamant that no water or ice dispenser was the way to go, and initially I was sceptical, but now I appreciate the extra space it gives us. There's still masses of ice in there anyway. We've been delighted with it, and I love the capacity plus the ease of use. It's frost free (another v useful feature).
