Stupid question - when hoovering carpet should the bristles on your hoover but out (in use) or in (not in use)?

Are the bristles for use on carpet or floor?

bristles in for carpet, out for hard surfaces.

unless you have animal (or indeed human) hair issues and STRONG UPPER BODY...in which case bristles on carpet can be, erm, "productive"...

Thank you! We do have animal and human hair issues. I think I moult as much as the dog! Thanks, was going to ask my mum but couldn't bear her knowing that I have never understood the hoover. £35 from argos BTW, better than my previous Dyson.

I appear to have been using my hoover incorrectly my whole life. Bristles in for a carpet? Really?
