Anyone know how to get rid of slugs in my kitchen?

Sometimes I see them on the work tops and find slug trails on my pots and pans in the cupboard. I know you can buy slug pellets but these can't be used around my 2 yo dd can they?

I completely eliminated the slug problem in my kitchen, after years of struggle. Let me show you how we did it. First of all, I think the slugs came in the kitchen from a plant pot that someone gave us. Don't bring plant pot inside the house is my advice! Once the slugs got inside, they lived behind the dish washer and came out at night. We tried many things to kill them. The one that finally killed them is this: my wife spread salt barrier on kitchen floor around the garbage bin. Slugs could not go near salt, so they starved to death after weeks of doing this.

Are you sure it crunched when you trod on it. I guess it must have been a snail, not a slug

They are gross. I find them eating my dog food. I sometimes forget to put it up high at night. My dogs graze.
I worry about lungworm. In the dogs. I put them back in garden. Well neighbours, usually over the wall. They're always crawling with parasites too. Then I feel sorry for the slugs. I'm such an idiot. I then end up cleaning the floor in the dead of night cos of the slug invasions.... arrrggghhh xx

I live in a Victorian house with earth under the floors and therefore damp, and have the horrible little slimy visitors you speak of, I read somewhere that they hate DETTOL SPRAY and have been spraying it around doorways and adding it to the mop bucket at regular intervals. Seems to be working, but does need re doing. I tend to get paranoid whenever it starts raining and I go round again. I would think it's safe around children.

Had this in a student house once. If you leave the light on they don't come in. Not sure why but it works.
Maybe it's like leaving a light on to deter burglars?

Nematodes are your friends.

They are naturally occurring, microscopic worms, harmless to humans, and arch enemies of slugs. Go biological warfare on their asses. Increase the nematode population on your land and you'll never see a slug again. It sounds grim but worked a treat when we were invaded. They're widely used in organic farming.

You can buy them online or I think a lot of garden centres stock them now.

If you have slug pellets but don't want to use them around pets/kids, take the kickboards off the bottoms of your kitchen cupboards, chuck a load of salt or slug pellets under there, then put the boards back on. Helps if they're coming up from under the floor.
