Black dust on the cream carpet - Help Please!

I hope someone in MN land can help!

My DH came home from work and lead on our lounge carpet to play with DD and had black carbon dust (dry oil- similar to brake dust) all over his trousers and we now have a huge patch on the floor and a marks up the stairs.

I have tried the dyson and a hand sweeping drush but it seamed to make it worse and I am nervous about putting water on it incase it spreads.

Anyone got any other ideas I can try?

Magnet? Might lift it if it's iron based...

Other than that I would have suggested the hoovering first but if that's not worked, I think you need to get the scrubbing brush out!!
