Carpet Cleaner

My dod is making the carpet stink!! We have used a rug doctor in the past but am now considering buying something to use on a more regular basis.
Can anyone suggest anything??

vax all the way mine is used twice a year (it's a few years old now)for cleaning carpets also when I cleaned the filter out on the washing machine last year & forgot to out it back properly,put machine on timer & came down in the morning to 5ins of water across the huge kitchen floor (much to amusement of all)my trusty vax sucked up all the water without me having to call someone out :o
