Help - our mattress is too hard!

We have had our Vi-spring mattress for about seven years, and it's always been too hard. DH and I have had enough, we wake up achey and not at all refreshed. Ironically, the more sleep we get, the worse we seem to feel as we have spent longer lying on this hard mattress. We are reluctant to get a new mattress as this one was rather pricey, but is there anything we could get in the way of a mattress topper or something, that would make it softer? Having said that, my PIL have a mattress topper, and it is awful - so soft that you feel like you are sleeping in a ditch, so i wouldn't want to go too far in the other direction.

Am a fussy bugger, clearly! Grin Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I got a John Lewis mattress topper for my bed as I found it too hard. At first it was really soft and full (lots of loft) - my husband detested it but after a few weeks it has settled down and is thinner and really very comfortable (microfibre one not a memory foam)although it does make the bed warmer - good in the winter but not so good when very hot.

Thanks both for your replies - good tip about microfibre, not memory foam enidroach, and presumably we'd do better with a thinner topper ruby if we don't want it too soft. Okay, off to peruse John Lewis website

We have this microfibre mattress topper and it is really comfy. I'd agree with enidroach's description. Haven't slept on it through a summer yet though.

would love to swap with you!!!! I find beds are never hard enough for me!!!
:)
if only I could afford the vi spring....!

Thin memory foam mattress toppers are on sale in Poundstretcher for around 20 quid. My boys have them on their beds and love them.

I'd recommend a feather/down topper if you can get one. They are supportive but soft, and you can keep fluffing them up so they keep their shape. My parents have one on their Vi-spring for this reason and it's very comfy.

Another option might be latex? It is not so hot as memory foam.

I had a feather topper and it was just too hot, like sleeping on a duvet as well as under one!

i found a 100% cotton topper with cotton filling (not foam) and its nice, much cooler, from john lewis of course

Comfiest mattress I ever slept on was an air mattress. Right now I have a poly filled topper and I like it.
