Cleaning my manky wood and leather dining chairs

My dining chairs are disgusting. They were expensive and good quality when they were new but, 2 children later, they have been sorely neglected.

I feel guilt.

They are the wooden ones with vertical struts and leather seats. The base of the struts at the back is crusted with crap, they are really dirty and the leather is spotted with all kinds of dried on crap.

I scrubbed the backs today with wooden floor cleaner, and a knife wrapped in a cloth and they look much better (not perfect but better). However the wood still looks a bit sorry for itself. If I oil it, will that make it better, or will that just still in any remaining grubbiness?

I'm nervous about the leather though. I think most of the crud is weetabix/shreddie related and I'm not sure how I get it off. Washing hasn't worked, nor leather cleaner and I don't want to damage it by scrubbing or using a chemical cleaner.

What's the best thing to do?
