Does anyone keep a freezer list?

I read a blog the other evening about freezing food (linked from mn) and the writer said she keeps a list by her freezer of everything that is in it so that she knows what she has and what she is short on and so that she manages to use everyting by its use by date. does anyone do his in Real life? It sounds like a good idea but I don't much like the thought of dragging everything out.

that being said I have stuff in the freezer that has been there for years and so maybe I should have one!

A list?? God no. I favour the 'drag everything out, swearing under my breath then ram it all back in' method of freezer maintenance.

To experience this fully it helps if the freezer is choc a block full and in dire need of defrosting which makes it doubly hard to get it shut again.

I have said on here before, we often have 'Brown' for dinner. 'Brown' is an unmarked container of something I made, froze and forgot what it wasBlush

my mother does

SilveryMoon · 10/05/2011 19:57

I have a list for my cupboards, not for my freezer.

teddies · 10/05/2011 19:58

I do, but I regard anything frozen as being in suspended animation. So no best before dates apply. I am a bit anal and like to know exactly how many fshfingers are in there at any time, I also get a lot of satisfaction from crossing things off the list once eaten....

supadupapupascupa · 10/05/2011 19:58

I tried

I failed

Great when you go shopping, crap when you've taken stuff out in a hurry and forgot to cross off

SilveryMoon · 10/05/2011 19:59

Some things can only be frozen for o long though can't they?

purpleknittingmum · 10/05/2011 20:00

Well I sort of do it, just for the main things for meals.

I just keep a note of how it, and how many nights worth of meals it will cook so we know if we have enough stuff before we next get some money. Sometimes we just make it - last meal cooked and then have to stock up the next day

Currently doing well, have enough food in there for about 10 days!!

We sometimes have 'brown' too BendyBob! Last week I got a bag out for my daughter's tea, thinking it was bolognese, got pasta on etc. It was curry! Quicly popped some rice on!

I've just discovered I can use a whiteboard marker to write on the freezer door what is in it, rather than have a list which I will instantly misplace.

It is actually quite useful to have a basic list of what is in the freezer so you don't have to look in all the drawers to remember you have 2 mackerel, 1/2 bag big prawns, 2 salmon fillets etc.

Best before dates don't apply to me, like Teddies said in her post

purpleknittingmum · 10/05/2011 20:02

oh yes teddies, I like scoring them off too! Blush have made a new list today!

purpleknittingmum · 10/05/2011 20:03

yes I have thought about a whiteboard but not really got anywhere to put it. I use a fridge magnet and the list lives on the fridge door with a few other bits and pieces!

Yes - but to help me with budgeting more than anything else. I am a bit of an idiot at buying meat or fish offers and freezing the extra - I can end up spending a bit extra each week and never getting any benefit.

Now I have one week a month where all the protein at least comes from the freezer so I am buying at most some fresh veg. It is a lovely cheap week and tbh barely dents the supplies so sometimes I carry it on for another few days!

Most weeks I also plan one evening meal to be from the freezer but dh often persuades me to get a takeaway instead which wrecks the budget after all my efforts...

virgiltracey · 11/05/2011 09:23

Right I think I'm goign to start. I just had a quick look and it seems that most of my freezer space is being taken up by five extra large chocolate fudge cakes. Not great planning!! Grin

Love the idea of writing directly onto the freezer. ours is in the garage and so that will make things much easier since a paper list is bound to go walkabout and will also remind me to update it.

Is it right that meat should only be frozen for six months or have I made that up?

There's an iphone app for just this occasion.

Desperately want one for my cupboards too!

AngelDog · 12/05/2011 20:03

I used to on my PDA but I don't have time now to keep it properly up to date.

I do a stock take every so often though.

JetLi · 12/05/2011 20:27

Could someone link to the blog please? Ta!

TragicallyHip · 12/05/2011 20:36

Yes me I do! Grin

I have a magnetic board on the fridge with most freezer items on. Once taken out I wipe off board.

I also have a separate magnetic board for shopping list (when we run out of something add it on) and a board for the meal plans.

Organised or borderline obsessive? Blush

JetLi · 14/05/2011 09:37

virgil - I can't find the blog you mentioned - please could you link, please? Smile

EttiKetti · 16/05/2011 09:19

I do Blush

I have a magnetic whiteboard thing on the FF - we have a sidebyside one and a small chest freezer too. Helps loads esp on weeks like this one when I want to have a Cheap Week and my weekly shop will be around £35 for 4 cos I can use loads out of freezer!

Many thanks virgil Grin

freezerlist.co.uk is an online freezer inventory

BensonBunny · 17/04/2021 09:02

My big freezer is in the garage at the bottom of the garden so I used to have an app, which worked well as long as you kept it up to date. You could move things to the shopping list when you took them out so you knew you needed to buy them again. It stopped working with the last big iOS update though and I haven't found anything else comparable since. If anyone has suggestions for an app for this l'd love to hear them (preferably one that will work on multiple devices)
